Sports Therapy for Recovery: What the Research Really Says

You do not have to wait for an injury to start paying attention to recovery.


Many people first seek care when a shoulder interrupts a press, a knee changes a run, or a back makes lifting feel uncertain. Yet soreness, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and recurring discomfort often show up well before a training week is completely derailed.


At Sanctuary of Art & Healing, sports therapy begins with a simple question: what is your body doing now, and what kind of support makes sense for your goals? That may include acupuncture, massage or manual therapy, cupping, TENS, movement guidance, or a referral when your symptoms require medical evaluation.


The research is useful, but it is not a permission slip for exaggerated promises. Here is what it actually says.


Recovery and performance are not the same thing


Feeling better after treatment does not automatically mean that strength, speed, or endurance has improved.


A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis of 29 randomized studies involving 1,012 participants found that sports massage was associated with small improvements in flexibility and delayed-onset muscle soreness. It did not show meaningful improvements in strength, jump, sprint, endurance, or fatigue measures.


That distinction matters. Massage may help an athlete feel less sore or move more comfortably, but it should not be marketed as a shortcut to better performance.


What acupuncture research can and cannot tell us


The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says acupuncture may be helpful for several pain conditions, including back or neck pain and knee osteoarthritis. It also notes that benefits are often larger when acupuncture is compared with no treatment than when it is compared with sham acupuncture. That means both treatment-specific and nonspecific effects may contribute to the experience of relief.


For exercise-related soreness, the evidence is mixed and based on small studies. One randomized trial of 22 adults found less reported soreness 72 hours after acupuncture, but no significant difference in force or pressure-pain threshold. Another randomized trial of laser acupuncture found no meaningful advantage over placebo for preventing delayed-onset muscle soreness or improving muscle performance.


The honest takeaway is not that acupuncture reliably prevents soreness or injury. It is that some people may experience pain relief, while the size and consistency of the benefit depend on the condition, treatment, and individual.


Myofascial pain has a stronger signal, with limits


A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials involving 852 patients found greater reductions in pain scores for acupuncture than for control treatments in people with myofascial pain syndrome. The authors also called for more research to clarify the best points and treatment duration.


That is promising for people whose training is complicated by persistent muscular pain or trigger-point sensitivity. It still does not prove that acupuncture prevents future injuries, and it does not replace a complete assessment of weakness, instability, technique, workload, sleep, or other contributors.


Cupping deserves the same honesty


Cupping is visually recognizable and popular in sports, but popularity is not the same as certainty. A systematic review of 11 randomized trials in amateur and professional athletes reported possible benefits for pain, disability, range of motion, and some recovery markers. Most studies had unclear or high risk of bias, and the reviewers concluded that no explicit recommendation for or against cupping could be made.


We treat cupping as an optional tool, not a miracle and not a badge of serious training.


A better reason to book sports therapy


The strongest case for sports therapy is not a promise that regular treatment will keep you injury-free. No ethical practitioner can promise that.


The better case is practical: an individualized assessment can help clarify what you are feeling, identify when a problem needs a different kind of care, and build a treatment plan around comfort, mobility, recovery, and your actual training demands. Reassessment also lets the plan change as your symptoms and goals change.


That is why we do not force every athlete into the same modality. A runner with heel pain, a lifter with a guarded shoulder, and a surfer with a stiff thoracic spine are not the same clinical puzzle.
